Map and Directions

An afternoon of conversations about contemporary jewellery and craft in Western Australia. Featuring a presentation by leading Australian jeweller and gallerist Katherine Kalaf and the opportunity to hear about the practices of six more metalsmiths. Anyone with an interest in creative practice and discussions about directions in contemporary craft will find this event both informative and entertaining. Ticket price includes afternoon tea and a sundowner.

The Katherine Kalaf Gallery 2004 - 2010

Katherine Kalaf opened the first gallery in WA dedicated exclusively to the representation of contemporary international and Australian jewellery designers. Katherine will share her story about why she chose to give contemporary jewellers prestige in this way, the precedence, and why in Cottesloe. Her talk will also include a snapshot view of her comprehensive archive of 30 years of Australian and international studio jewellers and smiths.

6X6: Meet the Makers and Smiths

Six jewellers and metalsmiths present six slides and talk for six minutes about a particular aspect of their work: Melissa Cameron, Alister Yiap, Sarah Elson, Susannah Kings-Lynne, Bethamy Linton and Claire Townsend.

Contemporary Craft Conversations

The nature of jewellery training, making and acquiring is in constant flux. Norms have shifted. What was once a relatively linear pathway is now a multi-dimensional maze. Whilst advances in technology and digital coms can open doors, they can also leave us dazed and confused.

The guest speakers will reflect on how the dynamic environment affects their making and selling; share their experience of current trends in Australia and internationally; and propose ways to push the boundaries of creative practice. After presenting their views on the ongoing questions and issues that exist in the contemporary jewellery arena in WA today, the audience will be invited to join the conversation - to brainstorm collective responses to these questions.

During the afternoon there will be a chance to chat over a cuppa and cake. Ticket-holders are also invited for after drinks at Joondalup Art Gallery to view the ADORN exhibition.

The City of Joondalup presents this event in partnership with Maker&Smith to complement the Jewellers & Metalsmiths Group of Australia, WA (JMGA WA) open exhibition ‘ADORN’ at the Joondalup Art Gallery (JAG). Maker&Smith present conversations, masterclasses and films to stimulate the contemporary craft & makers community in Western Australia.
