Map and Directions
In this presentation speaker and author Don Gordon details the foundations of leadership, knowledge gained from lengthy experience as a leader, senior manager and engineering consultant who has lived and worked in five countries.
Don learned some of his lessons about leadership when working on the world’s largest copper mine, 3,150 metres (10,000 feet) above sea level in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile.
He has come to understand the universal truths that underlie all successful leadership. He wrote a book to capture these learnings and in 2019 had the book published under the title ‘From Technocrat to Leader’.
His purpose in writing the book was to help emerging leaders understand what is fundamental to success as a leader and to set out practical ways of applying these principles. The book also aims to assist those already in leadership roles who see a need to recalibrate their leadership. The presentation centres on the themes in the book.
In his presentation Don retells and relives many of the stories in the book to illustrate the critical importance of trust and care to successful leadership and highlights the key lessons from the stories. He engages the audience to recall, and if willing, to recount some of their own experiences with leadership. He gives examples of ways for leaders to build trust and show care and provides evidence from research of the benefits when leaders do this.
