From The Winged Victory of Samothrace to the Mona Lisa, to the Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer, we all immediately recognize these images but do we know the stories behind them?

How and why did some images transform from a work of art into a secular icon – an object that is universally recognized and inspires crowds to line up in front of them? We all know the Mona Lisa even if we have never been to the Louvre. We have seen Klimt’s Kiss reproduced on mugs and bags. The Great Wave by Hokusai has become a world-renowned symbol of Japanese art.

Very few paintings have achieved such extreme visibility in modern popular culture as those mentioned above and it is fascinating to learn stories and myths behind them and their creators.

Cost $5.00. Book and pay online.
