Fisheries scientists use a range of methods to understand more about fish stocks and their habitats to ensure their sustainability. Join the Western Australian Fisheries and Marine Research Laboratories at Hillarys Boat Harbour to discover some of these methods.

The session will begin the visit with an introductory talk from the Community Education staff about how they interact with the marine environment and the impact that may have on it. An overview will be given of the role that the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (former Department of Fisheries) has in sustainably managing aquatic natural resources. You will then observe a fish dissection demonstration by one of the fishery scientists and learn why they dissect fish, how old fish live to be and how this information is used to assess the health of fish stocks.

The visit concludes with an opportunity to ask questions and a tour of some of the laboratories where you can see where these key activities are undertaken.

Please note: this event is suitable for ADULTS ONLY (18+).
