Nancy Riegelman, professor of design and drawing at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California and FIDM in Los Angeles, California and well-known author of books on fashion drawing and design will be giving a number of workshops in SE Asia in March 2017.

Workshop title: Drawing for Design
A concentrated half day course on how to master the techniques of fashion drawing for optimal design.

Introduction: Overview of the elements involved

Drawing
Drawing is the single most powerful tool of creative fashion design and the key to presenting the designs in one’s portfolio accurately and in their best light.

The language, grammar and syntax of fashion
Drawing is the language of fashion - the way we communicate our ideas. Fashion also has a grammar and syntax of its own - the way garments are structured and how their component parts combine to give meaning. This grammar and syntax of fashion has evolved with the development of fabric and garment design over the centuries.

Styling
The way we present all the other elements that make up the complete appearance of the garment on the figure changes the perception of the garment completely. The body itself - hairstyle, makeup, skin tone, pose. The other garments on the figure. How the figure is accessorized: shoes, bags, jewelry and so on. The same garment can be styled for different age groups, occasions, markets. Garments have no life until they are worn on the figure.

Talk/Demonstration: The Fashion croquis
Review drawing the nine-head fashion figure, the foundation of all good fashion drawing. Review drawing simple garments on the figure: pants, dresses, tailored garments. In-class assignment: Students will make a number of quick sketches of simple outfits on the figure.
